Ambition and mutiny

Once a proud Sons of Horus company, this warband’s fall to chaos was undoubtedly caused by the individual who now sits at its head: Jaego the Oathbreaker. During the heresy, this company of Cthonia’s finest sons were known as the Wild Boars of Cthonia, an armored fist regiment renowned for their use of Cataphractii terminator armor and heavily armored vehicles. Led by war chieftain Targhul Krul, these grizzled Cthonians were as abrasive as they came, often hazing and looking down upon those who weren’t from the mining world. Despite having the demeanor of a tribal gang from the mines, they had within them a strong sense of warrior pride, often holding the powers of chaos in contempt.

Jaego, a chaplain during the Horus Heresy, was sent by Maloghurst the Twisted to change this. It was his job to turn these proud warriors to the powers of the warp and corrupt them from within. However, he faced much abuse, often spurned for not being a Cthonian and also for a lack of combat prowess. Due to this, his work of spreading chaos saw no progress. This all changed after the failed Siege of Cthonia, where the Sons of Horus failed to retake the warmaster’s home planet.

After this failed campaign, the company’s warrior pride was severely wounded, and Jaego was able to sow the first seeds of treachery. Obsessed with regaining the company’s honor, warchief Targhul spent many resources chasing down loyalist fleets, an endeavor that some felt was a waste of time. Over time, Jaego was able to convince more and more of the space marines that the warchief was chasing shadows, and that the gods of the warp could grant them true power.

All this came to a head when Jaego was able to lead a majority of the company in a mutiny against the warchief. Many of Cthonia’s sons who remained loyal were slaughtered, although some were able to flee in thunderhawks. In an act of blasphemy that sealed the company’s corruption, Jaego forced Targhul into a dreadnought and offered him to the dark gods, corrupting the iron coffin and turning it into a monstrous helbrute. The gods rewarded Jaego in kind, granting him a living daemonic hammer that fused to his mutated right arm, granting him the strength that he never possessed, and symbolizing his treachery.

The warband was renamed to Desolation’s Overture, and is a stronghold based Black Legion warband. Jaego the Oathbreaker rules with an iron fist, rewarding those who were willing to sacrifice anything and everything in the name of power. Jaego is a notorious chaos lord, willing to lie, coerce, and use others to gain power. In this warband, power comes not to those born with it, but those who are willing to do anything to obtain it.
